To do in Sistiana

Beach

Down by the bay you’ll find beaches – not with sand but little rocks. Walking to the left, Castelreggio, with free showers and a café. To the right, Caravella: also café, nicer toilets, shower costs 0,20 €. Both beaches rent out sunbeds, but also have free areas.

Rilke path

A beautiful path over the cliffs, from the infopoint in Sistiana to the castle and village of Duino. Comfy shoes recommened. Perfect also for a morning walk. A must!

The castle of Duino

Visit of the castle, its park, and the ruins of the older castle. There should be a lego exhibition with local monuments, or something. Not a must, but could be a nice diversion.

Kayak trip to castle and beach of Duino

At Caravella beach there is a Kayak rental: you can paddle to the castle of Duino and see the whole thing from underneath. Else you can join organized kayak tours, with nature guides like Kayak in wonderland or Selvatico tours.

Public transportation

The nearest bus stop is called Sistiana Campeggio, and it’s just 100 m from home. It is served by bus 44 and G51.

BUS G51

It connects Sistiana with Trieste in one direction (25 min) and Trieste Airport in the other direction (45 min?). Runs about every 30 min til midnight, with a few exceptions. Tickets sold on tplfvg app, at the machine by the airport or bus station, and also by the camping or at the restaurant Da Gino closeby.

Bus 44

Gets you to Trieste in about 45 minutes, through the villages of the carsic plateau. Requires a normal hourly ticket for the city buses. App TPLFVG.

Boats

There are boats called Delfino Verde driving from the bay of Sistiana to Trieste. About 13€ one way, takes almost 2h but it’s nice to see the coast and the sea front. I like to go with the boat to Trieste and drive back by bus G51.

Train

The easiest train stop is Monfalcone if you want to do a day trip to Venice or some othet place. G51 bus stops nearby, google maps should be able to show you the way.

To do in Trieste

Classic touristic stuff

Definitely to see: Piazza Unità and Molo Audace, a walk up the old town, to the hill of San Giusto. There you’ll find the castle, cathedral and basilica. The cathedral is free and pretty cool to see, with its messy architecture. Its bell tower is also worth a visit, for a small price you can see the rests of an ancient roman temple underneath, and enjoy a nice view feom the top.

Close to the old town there is also a roman theatre, and and arch called Arco di Riccardo worth checking. If you like art, Museo Revoltella has a nice collection of semi-local stuff of different periods.

Nice areas for a stroll

Nice pedestrian areas are from Piazza Hortis (with Jarl’s favourite cefé “Mug”) through piazza Cavana, piazza della Borsa, piazza Ponterosso e Canal Grande. Near piazza della Borsa you can find the small restaurant Genuino, which offers some vegan options. Traditional local food is unfortunately strongly influenced by austrian cuisine, thus very far from vegan. If you are still looking for something typical, my favourite place is Da Giovanni, close to Canal Grande.

Another nice pedestrian area is Viale XX Settembre. Lots of trees, cafes and restaurants, including poke and a middle eastern one where you might find vegan dishes too.

Ice cream

My favourite ice cream is beyond doubt Zampolli in Via Ghega, close to train and bus station. They have ingmcredible granita (slush) with real fruit. Also the almond granita rocks.

Other nice ice creams are Marco, close to piazza Unità, Natura Gelato in piazza Hortis, Oggi and Con Amore.

There is a café that could be nice to see, caffé san Marco, which was one of the meeting places for literates and thinkers in the past.

Miramare castle

Between Sistiana and Trieste, reachable by bus. Haven’t been in the castle in ages, but even just the park is really worth it.

Caves

San Canziano caves are beautiful, but impossible to reach without a car. Very close to Sistiana there is Grotte di Slivia, small but just a few min by bus 44. Else a pretty epic one is Grotta Gigante. The easies bus route there is bus 44 to Prosecco and then 42 to Borgo Grotta Gigante. Caves must be booked in advance!
